UK supermarket chain Sainsbury's has decided to shut its supermarket at Merry Hill Mall in Birmingham, leaving 200 jobs at risk.

The branch opened in 1989, and will close on 30 December.

Sainsbury's said in a statement that it will look to deploy many of its affected employees into its other stores.

"We’re now conducting a consultation process with all affected colleagues who we will support through the difficult period ahead."

Sainsbury's spokesperson was quoted by Expressandstar.com as saying: “Like all retailers, we keep our estate under review to ensure our business is operating as efficiently and effectively as possible and to ensure we provide customers with the best possible service.

“On this occasion, we have announced plans to close our Merry Hill supermarket.

“We’re now conducting a consultation process with all affected colleagues who we will support through the difficult period ahead.”

Criticising the company's decision, employee union representatives stated no warning was given to employees on the closure plans.

In August, BHS closed its outlet also in Merry Hill Mall, a move that led to 100 employees losing their jobs.

Sainsbury’s has several outlets across Birmingham, but has not announced plans to close any further stores.
