Marks and Spencer (M&S) has unveiled a new 18,900ft² at its Aberdeen Union Square store in Scotland following an eight-month overhaul.

The expanded store features a newly established coffee shop and a revamped menswear section.

The redesigned foodhall aims to offer shoppers a fresh market-style experience with a complete selection of M&S’s food products.

Key features include an expanded in-store bakery, a hot chicken counter for ready-to-eat meals, a specialised cheese barge and dedicated flower and wine shops that showcase popular picks from the M&S Classics range.

The development replaces the previous 9,000ft² Union Square foodhall and the St Nicholas Street store.

The St Nicholas Street location ceased its foodhall operations on 10 April 2025 and will close by the summer.

M&S store manager Luke Smith stated: “Today, we’re delighted to unveil our new foodhall, after months of hard work and anticipation.

“We’ve created a space where Aberdeen shoppers can discover an incredible range of delicious products, all built on the great quality and trusted value M&S is known for. We’re confident that this expansion will be a real treat for our customers, and we’re so excited to finally share it with everyone.”

The opening of these new facilities marks the beginning of what will become a 97,300ft² full-line store.

The project represents a £15m ($19.62m) investment into Aberdeen’s city centre and is part of M&S’s broader £30m investment strategy across its Scottish stores. The full store will be open by summer 2025, featuring a 48,000ft² clothing, home and beauty department.

It will highlight M&S brands such as GoodMove, Per Una, Autograph and Apothecary.

The beauty section is set to triple in size to provide customers with an even wider range of branded beauty products.

M&S North Scotland regional manager Rachel Rankine stated: “This new foodhall is just the beginning of the unveiling of a new modern M&S in Aberdeen. We’re thrilled to offer a taste of what’s to come, showcasing our commitment to delicious food, trusted quality products and great value options.

“This flagship store represents a significant investment, and we’re building excitement for the full summer reveal.”

In March 2025 the company allocated £95m towards improving retail staff wages despite facing extra financial burdens from recent government policies – the largest investment in retail pay since Stuart Machin became CEO in 2022 and his third wage increase initiative since taking on his role.
