US supercentre chain Meijer has introduced its mobile shopping checkout programme, Shop & Scan, to 23 stores in Chicago and Northwest Indiana.
This move follows a pilot launch of the checkout programme at 54 stores in Michigan last year.

The launch covers stores in the Chicago area, including Aurora, Bloomingdale, St. Charles, Elgin, McHenry and Bolingbrook, as well as Northwest Indiana stores, including Merrillville, Valparaiso and Michigan City.
In order to use Shop & Scan, customers need to download the free Meijer app onto their mobile device. Customers can then use Shop & Scan, which is integrated with the company’s mPerks programme, to scan barcodes on products using their mobile phones during shopping.
After completing shopping, customers can then scan their phone at a self-checkout machine to pay and bag their groceries.
Based on feedback received from customers during the pilot, Meijer also added enhancements to the programme, such as integrated shopping list and the ability to clip any available mPerks coupons for items scanned.
Meijer regional vice-president Gerald Melville said: “We’re all challenged by time and busy schedules, so Shop & Scan allows customers the opportunity to truly be in control of their shopping trip, from the moment they walk in our stores to the minute they walk out.
“Customers are really responding to the simplicity of scanning and bagging as they go. This allows them to save time and avoid lines, speeding up their checkout experience.”
The company will also offer Meijer Home Delivery and Meijer Pickup options in all Chicagoland area stores.
