German supermarket chain Lidl has opened a new regional distribution centre in Exeter, UK, continuing its expansion in the country.
Built at a cost of £55m, the 538,195ft² warehouse is located in the Exeter Gateway business park and is said to have provided 500 jobs.

The facility will initially cater to 40 stores across the south-west region during the Christmas period before expanding its network to 51 stores in February.
With the opening of the facility, the retailer has now increased its distribution centres in the UK to 12.
Lidl UK regional director Mark Henry was quoted by media sources as saying: “This new regional distribution centre will play an essential role in helping us meet growing customer demand for our award-winning products.
“The south-west is an important region for Lidl and it’s an area where we’ve experienced particularly strong growth.

The new hub is part of the company’s expansion and modernisation programme, with plans to invest £1.45bn in the country by 2019.
During the last 12 months, the retailer had opened two warehouses.
Lidl began operating in the UK in 1994 and now has more than 650 stores.
