Intermarché has partnered with Shopic and Capgemini to launch a pilot programme for Smart Carts at its store in Provins, France.

This initiative reportedly marks Intermarché as the first European retailer to trial the Smart Cart solution.

The Smart Cart system, powered by AI and advanced computer vision technology, uses a clip-on device that can be easily attached to any standard shopping cart.

The device automatically detects items placed in the cart, eliminating the need for manual scanning.

The primary goal of this pilot is to enhance the shopping experience for customers by streamlining the checkout process.

Intermarché Provins owner Perrine Vignon said: “We are delighted with our collaboration with Shopic for this pilot project, which is an excellent opportunity to concretely test the benefits of AI, using computer vision, for retail.”

The new technology allows customers to track their budget in real time, check their loyalty points, and see offers and promotions directly applied to their cart total.

This allows customers to manage their spending more effectively and reduces time spent at self-checkouts.

The initiative intends to integrate and personalise retail media features such as advertisements and supplier offers throughout the shopping journey.

Shopic CEO and co-founder Raz Golan said: “Our collaboration with Intermarché demonstrates their visionary approach; it represents a significant step in bringing the benefits of online shopping to physical stores.

“By integrating our Smart Cart technology, Intermarché offers customers an innovative, interactive, and personalised shopping experience, as well as a secure, autonomous checkout solution.”

In March this year, Capgemini revealed that 80% of surveyed retail bank executives believe that generative AI represents a leap in advancing AI technology.
