North American grocery technology company Instacart has partnered with Price Chopper and McKeever’s Market & Eatery to introduce its AI-powered smart carts, known as Caper Carts.

The new smart carts will initially be rolled out across select Missouri stores in the US.

Caper Carts are designed to streamline the shopping experience by allowing customers to scan items as they add them to their carts, manage their budget in real time and bypass traditional checkout lines.

The carts are initially being introduced at Price Chopper in Parkville and McKeever’s Market & Eatery in Lee’s Summit, with plans for a wider future rollout.

They have been well received by a diverse range of shoppers, including families and senior citizens, due to their ease of use and convenience.

Smart carts offer a personalised shopping experience, featuring an interactive screen that engages customers and helps them track their spending for a more budget-friendly shop.

The feature allows customers to directly access coupons and deals via a loyalty programme.

Instacart’s Caper Carts also include engaging features throughout the shopping journey of a customer, allowing them to use features such as personalised recommendations and gamification elements that reward customers on reaching certain spending levels.

Since 2017, Price Chopper has used Instacart’s services for same-day delivery and pickup through the Instacart App.

Price Chopper recently implemented Instacart Storefront to enhance its e-commerce website.

The introduction of Caper Carts is part of Instacart’s Connected Stores initiative, which aims to merge online and in-store shopping experiences with advanced in-store technologies.

Instacart Connected Stores vice-president and general manager David McIntosh said: “Customers are increasingly choosing stores equipped with our Caper Carts, where they typically spend about 30 minutes shopping with the cart per visit. And now, we’re expecting similar enthusiasm at both McKeever’s Market & Eatery and Price Chopper.”

“Caper Carts can enhance the shopping experience through personalised interactions, such as loyalty discounts. They integrate smoothly into existing store operations and unlock incremental revenue streams for stores.”
