Grocery technology company Instacart has revealed that its AI-powered smart carts are increasingly adopted by local and independent grocers in the US.
The Caper Carts are now available in grocers such as Bowman’s Market, Maurer’s Market IGA, Neiman’s Family Market and others across various US states.
Caper Carts are equipped with cameras, sensors, and a built-in scale. They use an Edge AI system to automatically identify items as they’re placed into the cart.
This technology allows customers to monitor their running cost total in real-time.
The carts also feature an interactive screen that not only tracks spending but provides access to deals and product recommendations based on the customer’s in-store location and the contents of their cart.
Integrated with retailers’ loyalty programmes, the Caper Carts offer personalised promotions and rewards, incentivising shoppers with automatic discounts as they add more items to their cart.

By GlobalDataInstacart Local Independent Grocery general manager Nick Nickitas said: “Over the past year, we’ve seen a wave of innovative, independent grocers adopting Caper Carts.
“Caper Carts are enhancing the in-store grocery shopping experience by boosting sales, increasing the visibility of promotions and affordability, and creating new advertising opportunities for retailers through the engaging digital screen. These carts are an absolute hit with customers, helping local independent grocers solidify their place in the hearts and minds of the communities they serve.”
Caper Carts form part of Instacart’s Connected Stores suite, which includes various technologies such as Storefront, Carrot Ads, Eversight, and Carrot Tags.
These tools are designed to seamlessly integrate online and in-store shopping experiences for both retailers and customers.
Last month, Instacart announced the introduction of three new features for its AI-powered Caper Carts, aimed at maximising in-store rewards and savings for customers.
