Home furnishing retailer IKEA has announced plans to expand its click-and-collect service in the UK by adding 100 new points at Tesco stores.

The expansion comes as the retailer reached its 100th mobile pick-up point in July 2024, having begun trials in 2022.

IKEA UK expects to open half of the projected new points before the end of the year.

The service is free for orders above £100 ($129) and orders under this amount will be charged £5.

In Scotland, new collection points will be located at Tesco sites in Ayr, Dundee, Inverness, Kilmarnock and Perth.

The expansion will ensure that more than 90% of UK consumers are within five miles of a pick-up location.

Online purchases account for almost 40% of IKEA’s total sales.

IKEA UK country customer fulfilment manager Jakob Bertilsson said: “The opening of our first mobile pick-up point in Scotland and our one-hundredth across the UK marks an exciting moment for our journey to become more accessible. As we continue to see a shift in our visitors, [who wish] to shop even more conveniently, we need to constantly develop and improve with better and more affordable services.

“Our ambitions to double our Click & Collect offering, combined with the strengthening of services such as IKEA Home Delivery, means we are now closer than ever to people in all parts of the UK.”

The retailer’s nationwide expansion plan focuses on creating a more accessible shopping experience, with the mobile pick-up point network at Tesco a central component of this initiative.

Customers can access the mobile pick-up service by ordering through IKEA’s website or app, or with the help of an IKEA co-worker.

Orders are ready for collection from the next day from collection windows at participating Tescos.

In addition to mobile pick-up points, IKEA offers collection services at over 10,000 DPD points in the UK and provides same-day, free click-and-collect from its stores in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the Aberdeen Order and Collection point.

IKEA will also trial branded lockers at Tesco stores in other regions in the summer of 2024.
