Home furnishing retailer IKEA New Zealand has inaugurated its external warehouse at The Landing Business Park in Māngere.

The 20,000m² facility, designed and constructed by Auckland Airport, is set to house IKEA merchandise for distribution throughout the country, linked to the IKEA Sylvia Park store.

Once Sylvia Park is open, the product range will be accessible for home delivery across New Zealand, catering to customers in-store, online or via telephone.

The external warehouse will receive its first shipment of IKEA products by May 2025 and will store between 8,000m³ and 10,000m³ of inventory annually.

Several full 40ft shipping containers will be dispatched daily from the warehouse to the IKEA Sylvia Park store to maintain constant product availability.

A preliminary test shipment was carried out in November 2024 to fine-tune forecasted lead times and confirm compliance with New Zealand’s product standards. Items from this shipment are being assembled and utilised throughout the warehouse office.

IKEA New Zealand project fulfilment manager Adrian Pidgeon said: “The completion of the first IKEA New Zealand external warehouse marks a pivotal milestone in our market entry and has been the result of significant collaboration between IKEA, our construction partners Colliers and the Auckland Airport team.

“With the building now complete, many parts of the business are working together to ensure a great IKEA customer experience for New Zealanders supported by readily available products, no matter where they are located or how they choose to shop.”

IKEA New Zealand’s supply chain will benefit from two dedicated streams originating from Malaysia and China, while also sourcing products globally.

The company’s flatpacks contribute to logistical efficiency as their design maximises space utilisation, allowing more items per shipment.

The warehouse is also on its way to achieving a 5 Green Star Certified Rating from the New Zealand Green Building Council. It will feature environmentally friendly initiatives such as EV charging stations for staff and electric delivery vehicles.

An on-site system will sort cardboard, timber and plastic waste from replenishment processes for recycling purposes.

The Inter IKEA Group reported a 5.3% drop in IKEA retail sales revenue for the financial year 2024 (FY24). Total revenue was €45.1bn ($49.3bn).
