British co-operative group Co-op has announced the launch of a 24-hour online grocery delivery service in the UK, to meet the increasing demand for shopping at non-traditional times.
From September 2024, the service will be available in the cities of Leeds, London and Manchester, where demand for online groceries at unconventional times is notable.
Co-op has identified stores for this service based on local demographics, delivery driver availability and existing around-the-clock staffing for replenishment.
The convenience retailer will partner with Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats to facilitate the deliveries.
Co-op has also expanded its online availability in more than1,600 stores within their current opening hours.
The expansion allows more customers to shop later in the evening, enhancing the convenience of the Co-op’s online grocery offerings.

By GlobalDataCo-op e-commerce director Chris Conway said: “Meeting the needs of our member-owners and customers is at the heart of our approach and is aligned to our strategy to grow our share of the quick commerce market through both our own online shop and strategic partners.
“We focus on ease, speed and convenience from our local stores, which are well-placed in the heart of communities. Societal behaviours including changing lifestyles and shift working are increasing the requirement for online groceries to be delivered quickly and conveniently at non-traditional times of the day.”
The Co-op’s online grocery delivery channel has seen rapid growth, with record online sales of £311m in 2023.
The retailer has increased its market share to 23% and aims to surpass 30% by leveraging its own platform and quick commerce partners.
In March 2024, the Co-op introduced member price benefits to its online shop, offering additional value to its member-owners.
The retailer has set a goal to increase its active members from five million to eight million by 2030.
In June 2024, Co-op expanded its partnership with European e-commerce logistics solutions provider InPost, tripling the number of parcel lockers at the food retailer’s stores in the UK.
