French multinational retail giant Carrefour has officially terminated its operations in the Sultanate of Oman. No specific reasons have been given.
In a message posted on its official Instagram account, the retailer said: “Dear customers, as of 7 January 2025, Carrefour will cease operations in Oman. On behalf of Carrefour management and employees, we extend our sincere gratitude for your continuous support over the past decades.”
The exclusive rights to manage and operate Carrefour stores in the country were held by Majid Al Futtaim, a retail and leisure pioneer in the Middle East and North Africa.
Majid Al Futtaim launched the first Carrefour hypermarket in the region in 1995 at City Centre Deira, Dubai. By the year 2020, the conglomerate oversaw more than 320 Carrefour stores across 16 nations.
Zawya reports that Carrefour’s brand in Oman has been replaced by a new retail name, Hypermax.
Carrefour signage at stores in Muscat has been replaced with Hypermax branding.

By GlobalDataTAS News Service reports that Majid Al Futtaim has launched 11 Hypermax locations across the country.
The company was quoted as saying: “HyperMax will prioritise local hiring and sourcing to better serve the local community. HyperMax will offer a wide selection of top-quality products at competitive prices, value-for-money offers and a consumer-friendly, modern shopping experience.”
The strategic move mirrors an earlier development from 5 November 2024, when Majid Al Futtaim confirmed the cessation of Carrefour’s operations in Jordan, subsequently replaced by the Hypermax brand.
