Big Lots is set to re-emerge in the US retail landscape with discount retailer Variety Wholesalers disclosing the initial series of openings for its recently obtained Big Lots outlets.
The inaugural group of nine stores will launch on 10 April 2025 in six US states. The brand then plans to relaunch Big Lots! stores in multiple states including North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Ohio.
Having tactically purchased 219 outlets during Big Lots!’ bankruptcy proceedings, Variety Wholesalers is now applying its successful approach to value-focused retail to these sites.
In January 2025, a sales agreement between Big Lots and Gordon Brothers Retail Partners granted Variety Wholesalers the rights to a number of retail and distribution centres.
Shoppers can anticipate renovated premises and bargain buys, alongside new product categories such as family apparel and electronics.
The company plans to progressively inaugurate the acquired stores, targeting around 55 locations for a second phase of openings scheduled for 1 May.
The final set of stores will commence operations by early June, culminating in a comprehensive grand opening event in the autumn across all newly opened locations.
Variety Wholesalers president and CEO Lisa Seigies stated: “We’re thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family.
“We’re opening stores quickly so we can serve the community. We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week we’ll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall. Every time a customer visits Big Lots! we want them to find something new and exciting.”
The assimilation of Big Lots locations represents considerable growth for Variety Wholesalers, reinforcing its presence in the discount retail market.
Its portfolio now comprises 400 stores across 18 states under notable chains such as Roses, Roses Express and Maxway.
