French supermarket retailer Auchan has revealed plans to cut more than 2,000 jobs as part of a corporate restructure aimed at fostering growth.

As part of the restructuring process, Auchan has stated that 2,389 jobs will be eliminated across various departments, but that 319 roles will be created.

The job cuts, revealed on 5 November 2024, are one component of a strategic plan focused on revitalising its hypermarket and supermarket formats through new sales projects, competitive pricing and an overhaul of its business model.

The retailer is seeking to reverse a decline in store traffic and deteriorating results experienced since 2012.

Before the integration of Casino stores, Auchan saw its market share drop from 12.1% to 8%, with revenues falling by €2.26bn ($2.46bn).

The company’s new growth strategy includes enhancing the customer experience and making decisive choices in its product offerings.

In food, Auchan plans to reinforce its catering services and private labels, which are fundamental to its product range.

For non-food items, the focus will be on everyday products, with enhanced presentation during seasonal periods.

Auchan is also leveraging its alliance with Intermarché to improve purchasing conditions, but acknowledges that cost-cutting and organisational simplification are necessary to maintain competitive pricing.

The company is experimenting with new store models and is resizing around 60 stores to align with local consumer habits and regional specificities.

The new organisational structure, currently being tested in Bordeaux, will integrate the brand’s national and international presence with regional adaptation.

This approach will provide stores with appropriate autonomy while adhering to national policies and promoting multi-format, multi-channel development.
