British supermarket chain Asda has initiated a £50m store upgrade programme, aimed at enhancing the shopping experience in its larger supermarkets and superstores.

170 stores will be upgraded through the programme, beginning with the Long Eaton store in Nottingham.

The programme will see major improvements delivered to 50 larger stores, including the introduction of new in-store services and features.

Shoppers can look forward to a new George clothing department in select stores, revamped foyers, new food-to-go services, seasonal aisles, counters and updated flooring and lighting.

The remaining stores will receive a facelift with refreshed exterior and interior decoration, aligning with Asda’s recent rebranding efforts.

This will include an updated colour palette, logo and typography.

Stores will benefit from new trolley bays, signage, upgraded toilet facilities and exterior landscaping.

Coventry, Altrincham, Dundee and Charlton will see these improvements rolled out in the summer of 2024.

The extensive work will occur over five weeks during which stores will remain operational with minimal expected disruption to customers, and the programme is set for completion by the end of November 2024.

Asda construction and implementation senior director Ian Brackenbury said: “We are always looking at ways in which we can improve the overall experience for our customers and this programme is one of the many ways we are actively doing that.

“Starting with our supermarkets and superstores, this significant investment allows us to upgrade our stores by launching new and exciting services, whilst making significant improvements to the existing components of our established stores.

“This programme marks another exciting milestone moment for us on our journey and underpins our continued commitment to ensuring Asda is set up for long-term success.”

The initiative follows Asda’s substantial investment in the first quarter to convert all 470 convenience stores acquired from EG Group and the Co-op to the Asda Express format.

It marks the company’s expansion to more than 1,000 UK stores for the first time in its 59-year history.

Since its acquisition in June 2021, Asda’s shareholders have invested £3.5bn to transform the business.

In May 2024 Asda launched a transformative mixed-use development project at its Park Royal site in north-west London, England.
