Amazon has opened a new micromobility hub in Berlin, Germany, marking a significant expansion of its e-cargo bike delivery service.

The move is part of the e-commerce giant’s €400m ($431.3m) investment to electrify and decarbonise its German transportation network.

The new hub, located near Alexanderplatz, will see electric bikes from manufacturer Mubea delivering more than 1.5 million parcels per year across Berlin.

This will help Amazon reduce its reliance on traditional delivery vans, easing traffic congestion and improving air quality in the city centre.

Micromobility hubs act as central points within urban areas where packages are loaded onto delivery vehicles for the final leg of their journey.

Amazon has been rapidly expanding its network of these hubs across Europe, with more than 50 now operational in 40 cities across the continent.

“It’s a great next step for us to build out e-bike deliveries, especially in Berlin. This way, we ensure a timely delivery for our customers and reduce traffic within Berlin at the same time,” said Rocco Bräuniger, country manager of Amazon Germany.

“Reducing our delivery-related emissions plays an important role on our path to being carbon neutral by 2040.”

Beyond Berlin, Amazon is utilising e-cargo bikes in other German cities such as Munich, Freiburg, Koblenz, Aachen, and Essen.

The company has set an ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040, and the expansion of its electric vehicle fleet is a key part of this strategy.

To support its electrification efforts, Amazon has invested in more than 1,200 electric delivery vans in Germany, including 300 new vehicles from Rivian.

The company has also installed thousands of electric charging points across its facilities in the country.

With this latest expansion, Amazon is demonstrating its leadership in the retail industry’s shift towards more sustainable and efficient delivery operations.
