Online retailer Amazon has entered into a lease agreement to establish its $80m Greenwood distribution centre in South Carolina, US.
Once operational, the facility will serve the packaging needs of products for shipment to fulfilment centres. The project is expected to create 1,250 jobs.
Amazon will invest $45m on the building and the remaining $35m on the facility’s equipment, such as conveyor systems, parcel sorters, racking systems, material-handling equipment and IT scanning and picking equipment.
The facility, which is set to open next year, will be fully operational by the end of 2021.
Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers said in a statement: “Greenwood is pleased to welcome Amazon to the community. It’s a strong sign for our city when the world’s second largest company chooses Greenwood to invest more than $80m and $2m in public infrastructure improvements.
“They plan to hire more than 1,250 people and pay them more than double the current minimum wage in Indiana. It’s a win-win for all involved, and we look forward to a promising future.”
