Global online retail major Amazon.com is planning to open a robotics fulfilment centre in Michigan, US.
To be located in Gaines Township, the new site is expected to offer more than 1,000 jobs, as well as a chance to engage with Amazon Robotics in a technological workplace.
Amazon North America operations vice-president Mark Stewart said: “Michigan has been a great place to do business for Amazon and we look forward to adding a new fulfilment centre to better serve our customers in the region.
“Because of our ability to have more inventory on-hand and increased speed of fulfilment, we are able to better meet customer demand and create more than 1,000 new jobs with competitive pay and great benefits starting on day one of employment.
“We are proud of our ability to create jobs, spur innovation and provide excellent Prime service to members.”
The retailer will use the new 850,000ft2 robotics site to pick, pack and ship small items such as books, electronics and toys to customers.
The centre will also feature Amazon Robotics to help employees in fulfilling customer orders.
Gaines Township supervisor Robert DeWard said: “We are very pleased to welcome Amazon to Gaines Township with this new type of Amazon Robotics fulfilment centre.
“This is a huge win for Western Michigan and a wonderful opportunity for our entire region, providing jobs for subcontractors, suppliers, and the 1,000 employees who will join the Amazon team.”
