The Aldi South Group has secured the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validation for its net zero emission targets.

The retailer aims to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions [direct emissions owned or controlled by a company, and emissions a company causes indirectly and which come from where the energy it purchases and uses is produced] 90% by 2035 from a 2021 base year, and Scope 3 emissions [which a company is indirectly responsible for up and down its value chain] 90% by 2050 from a 2022 base year.

In addition to its long-term objectives, Aldi South Group has committed to slashing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 52% and Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030 from the respective 2021 and 2022 base years.

The company has also set targets for FLAG [forest, land and agriculture] emissions, with a 30.3% reduction in both Scope 1 and Scope 3 such emissions by 2030.

The SBTi confirmed that the retailer’s interim and long-term goals align with its corporate net zero standard and the SBTi FLAG guidance.

To tackle emissions, the retailer will invest in decarbonising its supply chain by collaborating with NGOs [non-governmental organisations], joining multistakeholder initiatives, and funding on-farm pilot programmes, particularly in dairy and beef supply chains.

Aldi is working with third-party logistics providers to explore the use of alternative fuel sources and electric trucks.

The company is also transitioning all stores to natural refrigerants by 2035, a move recognised by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Aldi’s efforts extend to reducing energy consumption through investments in energy efficiency across its stores, distribution centres and offices.

The retailer sources 100% of its electricity from renewable energy sources.

Aldi US CEO Jason Hart said: “There is a reason why Aldi is one of the only grocery retailers with SBTi-validated net zero targets. We do things differently and sustainability is no exception.

“For instance, because our stores are stocked with 90% Aldi-exclusive brands, we can work more directly with our suppliers on emissions reductions. These industry-leading science-based targets are another way we are underscoring our commitment to operating sustainably and responsibly so we can keep offering quality, affordable groceries.”

In April 2024, Aldi partnered with Grabango to launch ALDIgo checkout-free shopping at a suburban Chicago area store.
