Supermarket chain Aldi was named the cheapest supermarket in the UK for the 12th consecutive month in October 2024.

Latest figures from consumer champion Which? revealed that the average weekly basket at Aldi is £30.73 ($39.92) less than at Waitrose, which offers an average weekly basket of £142.39.

The consumer group analyses the average price of 62 items at eight supermarkets in the UK on a monthly basis.

It found that in October, customers could have saved £122.92 by shopping at Aldi instead of Waitrose.

Discount retailer Lidl was the second cheapest supermarket, with average basket price costing only 41p more than Aldi.

Further insights from Which? suggest that switching from Tesco to Aldi could leave customers with an additional £53.72 at month’s end.

Even with loyalty schemes taken into account, Sainsbury’s was £14.27 more costly than Aldi, and Tesco £10.60 more costly – and Lidl shoppers using the Lidl Plus app for discounts would also have benefited financially from shopping at Aldi during the same period.

Aldi UK buying managing director Julie Ashfield said: “Although we’re not surprised to hear we have been the UK’s cheapest supermarket for 12 consecutive months, we’re still enormously proud of this achievement.

“Our customers know that the only place to get Aldi prices is at Aldi – and the fact that we’re the only UK supermarket to achieve this milestone is proof of that promise.

“Our unswerving commitment to providing the best quality food at the best possible prices clearly shines through when customers see how much money they can save every week simply by switching to Aldi. Here’s to 12 more amazing months!”

Sainsbury’s recently revealed plans to introduce the Aldi Price Match offer in its Local convenience stores – a first in the UK grocery sector.
