The retailer will use the facility to support 60 Aldi stores in the region. It is expected to create 400 new jobs.

“There are still many towns and cities where we have a limited presence or none at all.”

The Isle of Sheppey regional distribution centre managing director Ben Shotter was quoted by producebusinessuk.com as saying: “The new Sheppey distribution centre significantly increases our capacity and allows us to open more stores across the South East to cater for the growing number of shoppers switching to Aldi.

“Although some of our newest and most popular stores are situated in the South East, there are still many towns and cities where we have a limited presence or none at all. This is something that we are looking to address in the coming years.”

According to the news website, the retailer is planning to expand its store network and open 130 new stores in areas such as London and Brighton by 2020.

Last month, the supermarket chain reported strong sales in the UK in the run-up to Christmas.
