The global retail industry noticed an 11.7% rise in IT hiring activity in February 2021 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 43.82% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The retail industry’s overall hiring activity declined 0.89% when compared with January 2021.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 2.7% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in February 2021, up 0.51% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of February 2021 were 7.2% higher compared with the previous month.
The increase was a result of 18.97% lower job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 69.28% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in February 2021, a 4.02% increase over the previous month. Miscellaneous Computer Occupations came in second with a share of 11.91% in February 2021, up 15.53% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a 6.44% share in February 2021, increase of 21.77% over the previous month, and Computer Support Specialists with a 5.35% share in February 2021 and rise of 13.69% over January 2021.
Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in February 2021
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average increase of 8.39% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during February 2021 over January 2021.
Amazon posted 2,245 IT jobs in February 2021 and registered a drop of 0.13% over the previous month, followed by Woolworths Holdings with 459 jobs and a 30.4% rise. Walmart with 265 IT jobs and J Sainsbury with 167 jobs, recorded a 33.17% increase and a 28.46% growth, respectively, while eBay recorded a 48.45% growth with 144 job postings during February 2021.
Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in February 2021 with a 64.12% share, which marked a 9.61% growth over the previous month.
Europe stood next with 17.76%, registering a 17.88% month-on-month increase. Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with a 16.12% share and an 8.02% decline over January 2021.
In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 1.13% and a month-on-month growth of 16%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.86%, registering a 20% drop over the previous month.
