A total of 39 retail industry deals worth $2.22bn were announced for the region in June 2019, against the 12-month average of 47 deals.
Of all the deal types, M&A saw most activity in June 2019 with 26 transactions, representing a 66.7% share for the region.
In second place was venture financing with nine deals, followed by private equity deals with four transactions, respectively capturing a 23.1% and 10.3% share of the overall deal activity for the month.

North America retail industry deals in June 2019: Top deals
The top five retail deals accounted for 95.8% of the overall value during June 2019.
The combined value of the top five retail deals stood at $2.13bn, against the overall value of $2.22bn recorded for the month. The top announced retail deal tracked by GlobalData in June 2019 was Abrams Capital Management, Hanover Investments (Luxembourg), Rhone Capital, Richard A. Baker and WeWork Property Advisors’ $1.31bn private equity deal with Hudson’s Bay.
In second place was the $683m private equity deal with Barnes & Noble by Elliott Management and in third place was Nexus Capital Management’s $95m private equity deal with FTD Companies.
The $21.45m stake acquisition of Sears Hometown and Outlet Stores by Transform Holdco and Greenoaks Capital Management’s venture financing of Misfits Market for $16.5m held fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
