The global retail industry noticed a 2.2% rise in IT hiring activity in August 2021 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 45.29% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The retail industry’s overall hiring activity increased 6.49% when compared with July 2021.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 4.2% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in August 2021, down 0.12% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of August 2021 were 0.89% lower when compared with the previous month.
The decrease was a result of 3.18% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 74.5% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in August 2021, a 7.32% growth over the previous month. Miscellaneous Computer Occupations came in second with a share of 7.84% in August 2021, up 29.19% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a 7.74% share in August 2021, a decline of 16.8% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Research Scientists with a 4.32% share in August 2021 and a rise of 16.18% over July 2021.
Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in August 2021
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 0.8% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during August 2021 over July 2021.
Amazon posted 4,142 IT jobs in August 2021 and registered a drop of 6.9% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 581 jobs and a 28.82% growth. Alibaba Group Holding with 471 IT jobs and J Sainsbury with 446 jobs, recorded a 34.19% growth and a 3.88% drop, respectively, while CVS Health recorded a 14.66% rise with 219 job postings during August 2021.
Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in August 2021 with a 65.91% share, which marked a 3.38% rise over the previous month.
Asia-Pacific stood next with 18.92%, registering a 34.21% month-on-month growth. Europe was the third leading region with a 14.01% share and an 11.04% drop over July 2021.
In the fourth place was Middle East & Africa with a share of 0.59% and a month-on-month drop of 34.15%. South & Central America stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.58%, registering a 39.08% decrease over the previous month.
