The global retail industry noticed a 3.3% decline in IT hiring activity in June 2021 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 48.84% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The retail industry’s overall hiring activity declined 2.57% when compared with May 2021.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 3.89% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in June 2021, down 0.2% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of June 2021 were 1.61% lower compared with the previous month.
The decrease was a result of 5.31% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 76.34% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in June 2021, a 7.53% decline over the previous month. Database and Network Administrators and Architects came in second with a share of 7.66% in June 2021, down 2.44% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Miscellaneous Computer Occupations with a 7.01% share in June 2021, an increase of 2.43% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Research Scientists with a 3.92% share in June 2021 and drop of 13.52% over May 2021.
Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in June 2021
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 12.76% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during June 2021 over May 2021.
Amazon posted 3,827 IT jobs in June 2021 and registered a drop of 7.52% over the previous month, followed by Walmart with 428 jobs and a 5.16% rise. J Sainsbury with 319 IT jobs and Alibaba Group Holding with 216 jobs, recorded a 151.18% an increase and a 74.8% drop, respectively, while CVS Health recorded a 7.06% growth with 182 job postings during June 2021.
Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in June 2021 with a 69.87% share, which marked a 3.37% drop over the previous month.
Europe stood next with 14.82%, registering a 23.64% month-on-month an increase.Asia-Pacific was the third leading region with a 13.35% share and a 35.23% decline over May 2021.
In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 1.16% and a month-on-month growth of 28.17%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.8%, registering a 36.36% drop over the previous month.
