The global retail industry noticed a 0.5% decline in IT hiring activity in April 2021 over the previous month, led by Amazon’s 44.19% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The retail industry’s overall hiring activity an increased 7.62% when compared with March 2021.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 3.76% share of the global retail industry’s hiring activity in April 2021, down 0.21% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of April 2021 were 2.47% lower compared with the previous month.
The decrease was a result of 7.4% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 69.61% emerged as the top IT occupation in the retail hiring activity in April 2021, a 25.44% decline over the previous month. Miscellaneous Computer Occupations came in second with a share of 11.73% in April 2021, down 7.65% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with an 8.63% share in April 2021, decline of 8.77% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Research Scientists with a 3.87% share in April 2021 and drop of 16.25% over March 2021.
Top five retail companies by recruitment activity in April 2021
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 26.84% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global retail industry during April 2021 over March 2021.
Amazon posted 3,410 IT jobs in April 2021 and registered a drop of 33.24% over the previous month, followed by Woolworths Holdings with 755 jobs and a 20.94% decline. Walmart with 312 IT jobs and CVS Health with 294 jobs, recorded a 6.87% decline and a 98.65% growth, respectively, while Lowe’s Companies recorded a 17.2% drop with 154 job postings during April 2021.
Regional composition of IT hiring in retail industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global retail IT hiring activity in April 2021 with a 66.72% share, which marked a 22.59% drop over the previous month.
Asia-Pacific stood next with 17.71%, registering a 14.24% month-on-month decline.Europe was the third leading region with a 13.62% share and a 15.45% decline over March 2021.
In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 1.27% and a month-on-month drop of 33.33%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 0.67%, registering a 43.48% drop over the previous month.
