US retailer Amazon‘s same-day delivery site in Sacramento, California, has secured zero carbon certification from the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), a third-party certified standard for lower-carbon buildings.
The facility, known as SCA5, is the first fulfilment centre or logistics site in North America to receive such recognition from ILFI.
Opened in 2022, the facility is strategically located to fulfil deliveries as early as five hours after purchase.
Amazon’s SCA5 incorporates sustainable features such as lower-carbon concrete, recycled asphalt and a fully electrified HVAC [heating, ventilation and air conditioning] system.
Its design includes a white roof to minimise heat absorption and smart irrigation systems to conserve water.
The retailer is installing solar panels which will generate up to 80% of the building’s annual electricity consumption.

By GlobalDataAmazon chief sustainability officer Kara Hurst said: “At Amazon, we are laser-focused on reaching our Climate Pledge commitment by 2040 — and our buildings are a big piece of this puzzle.
“This facility is not only delivering for our customers within hours of their order, but was also built to reduce its environmental impact. We are challenging ourselves to think big and design Amazon’s buildings in a way that helps lead the industry toward decarbonisation.”
To secure certification, SCA5 had to meet stringent requirements over 12 months, including energy efficiency performance targets and being powered by 100% renewable energy.
The certification also mandates carbon neutralisation through additional climate solution financing in the voluntary carbon market.
International Living Future Institute CEO Lindsay Baker said: “This project sets a new high bar for construction projects in its class around the world. Committed companies like Amazon can drive the decarbonisation of the building industry and show other companies how to act now to reduce supply chain carbon emissions.”
Amazon recently replaced 95% of plastic air pillows with paper filler in its North American delivery packaging.
