In a move that signals a significant shift towards ethical cocoa sourcing in the UK, Waitrose, a leading retailer, has partnered with Tony’s Open Chain, an initiative launched by Tony’s Chocolonely to combat exploitation in the cocoa industry.
This designation signifies Waitrose’s commitment to Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles, which prioritise ethical and sustainable practices throughout the cocoa supply chain. These principles include:
- Rigorous traceability: Ensuring cocoa beans can be tracked from farm to bar.
- Living income reference price: Paying farmers a fair price that allows them to earn a living wage.
- Long-term partnerships: Collaborating with cocoa cooperatives to empower farmers and build thriving communities.
Previously, all Waitrose own-brand cocoa products were already Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance certified. Joining Tony’s Open Chain elevates these efforts by focusing on specific measures to eradicate child labour, deforestation, and economic disparity within the cocoa industry.
Collaboration in ethical cocoa sourcing
The Tony’s Open Chain model fosters collaboration among Mission Allies, who compete in the chocolate market but work together to improve cocoa sourcing practices. This unique approach allows for a unified industry voice advocating for systemic change.
Waitrose’s partnership with Tony’s Open Chain will directly impact cocoa farmers in Côte d’Ivoire.
Sanne Van Zon-Arts, Head of Sales at Tony’s Open Chain emphasised the importance of this partnership: “Waitrose will pave the way for changing the norm in cocoa and offering consumers more opportunities to choose responsible chocolate for which farmers are paid the living income reference price.”
