Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon, has unveiled its latest initiative to bolster its global infrastructure with the launch of the AWS Canada West (Calgary) Region.
This development marks AWS as the first major cloud services provider to establish an infrastructure region in Western Canada, extending its footprint in the country.
The newly introduced AWS Calgary Region comprises three Availability Zones, providing customers with enhanced options for deploying applications with increased resilience, availability, and lower latency.
This expansion allows developers, startups, enterprises, government entities, and non-profit organisations across Canada to leverage AWS data centres within the country for running applications and serving end-users.
Significance for Canada’s economic landscape
AWS’ strategic move aligns with its commitment to investing an estimated $17.9bn in Canada through 2037.
The economic impact study released by AWS outlines the expected creation of more than 9,300 full-time equivalent jobs annually and a substantial contribution to Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP).
