US-based grocery chain Food Lion is set to invest $168m to remodel 105 stores in greater Norfolk, Virginia, this year.

The investment will be used to remodel the stores, lower prices, expand product offerings, as well as create 5,000 new jobs and promote current associates.

During the renovation, all the 105 stores will remain open for business during the normal operating hours.

Following the renovation, the newly designed stores will offer an expanded assortment of products, including local, natural, organic and gluten-free items.

As a result of its customer-centric training programme for associates, the stores will feature new registers and offer enhanced customer service.

The investment will see 12 of the 105 stores feature walk-in garden coolers to keep the products fresh for longer periods.

The grocery store chain also plans to expand the deli departments of six stores by adding handmade artisan pizza, wing bar, premium coffee and soda stations.

Additionally, the grocery chain will use the investment to establish community partnerships through its hunger-relief initiative, Food Lion Feeds.
