Google has teamed up with US retailers in a new initiative that will help it boost sales and challenge Amazon’s presence in the online retail sector.
Google’s new Shopping Actions programme allows retailers to list their products on Google Search, Google Express shopping service, and Google Assistant on mobile devices.
Under this service, retailers will have to pay Google a portion of the profits from the sale of each product, which is different to the payments that retailers need to make to place ads on Google platforms.
Through Shopping Actions, Google aims to help retailers influence shoppers’ purchasing decisions, who otherwise might be heading towards rival Amazon.
The initiative is aimed at helping retailers seize more purchases on desktops, mobile phones and tablets.
Customers will also find the new programme beneficial as it will allow them to make purchases through a single shopping cart with instant checkouts.

Google’s retail and shopping president Daniel Alegre said: “We have taken a fundamentally different approach from the likes of Amazon because we see ourselves as an enabler of retail.
“We see ourselves as part of a solution for retailers to be able to drive better transactions and get closer to the consumer.”
Shopping Actions will be available in the US to retailers of all sizes.
