Indian e-commerce retailer Flipkart has opened a fulfilment centre in the state of West Bengal.
Located in Dankuni, the facility is the company’s second largest fulfilment centre in the state. It will support the online retailer in meeting increasing demand across India’s eastern region.
Covering more than 220000ft² of space, the centre will serve Flipkart and Myntra customers and help thousands of sellers to offer larger selections and faster deliveries.
Flipkart currently has seven fulfilment centres in West Bengal, covering a total area of one million square feet, as well as 152 delivery hubs.
The Walmart-owned retailer has partnered with more than 9,300 Kirana delivery partners and 10,000 sellers in the state, creating almost 50,000 jobs in the process.
Flipkart supply chain senior vice-president Hemant Badri said: “This expansion will help support small and medium businesses [in] the state while creating thousands of employment opportunities.

By GlobalData“E-commerce has helped serve citizens with a safe and sanitised supply chain and we will continue to serve the ecosystem, including the [hundreds of thousands] of sellers, micro, small and medium enterprises, Kirana partners, millions of consumers and thousands of brands that we work with.”
West Bengal industry commerce and enterprises secretary Vandana Yadav said: “Flipkart’s continued investment in [West Bengal] is a testament to the enabling environment the state has helped create not just [for] job opportunities but [for] safe deliveries for consumers.”
Earlier this month, Flipkart introduced a payment feature based on quick response (QR) codes for all its pay-on-delivery shipments.
Consumers who regularly choose cash on delivery (COD) can switch to digital payments by scanning the QR code attached to their purchase using any Unified Payments Interface (UPI) app.
Flipkart claims that contactless digital payment is safe and helps address the low levels of trust that many consumers have in online transaction services.
