Retail credit card spending in New Zealand increased by 0.5%, seasonally adjusted, in August, as against the same period last year, according to Statistics New Zealand.
New Zealand business indicators manager Neil Kelly said: "The hospitality and consumables industries were the main drivers of August’s retail increase.
The three largest retail movements in August 2014 were: hospitality, up 1.3%; consumables, up 0.6%; and fuel, down 0.4%.
Core retail spending (which excludes the vehicle-related industries) added 0.6% in August. During the period, total credit card spending was up 0.3% on month following the 0.2% decline in the previous month.
Trends for the total, retail, and core retail series have all generally been rising since the series began in October 2002, the agency said.
In unadjusted terms, 119 million transactions were made across all industries in August, with an average value of NZ$50 ($41.5). The total amount spent across all transactions was NZ$6bn.
