Australian supermarket chain Woolworths Group’s division Big W has entered into an agreement with landlords to close three stores in January 2020.

The three stores are located in Chullora, Auburn and Fairfield in Sydney. The closure agreement follows an announcement, made this April, to close 30 under performing Big W stores and two distribution centres over the next three years.

Big W is an Australian chain of discount department stores. It opened its doors in 1976 for business in Tamworth, New South Wales, according to Woolworths.

“These are not decisions we take lightly and we regret the impact the closures will have on affected team members.”

Big W managing director David Walker said: “These are not decisions we take lightly and we regret the impact the closures will have on affected team members.

“We would like to acknowledge the support of the communities of Chullora, Auburn and Fairfield and the hard work and commitment of our store team members.

“Supporting our team remains our priority and we are committed to doing the right thing by them.”

The supermarket chain is planning to continue operations in the three stores for the next six months.

Big W also plans to work with landlords over the coming months and continue its commitment to establish robust and sustainable network.

Walker added: “Over the next six months, we will support our team and explore redeployment opportunities with team members who choose to continue their career at Big W or with other Woolworths Group brands in the months ahead.”
