Swedish clothing retailer H&M has joined Ellen MacArthur Foundation-led New Plastics Economy initiative as a core partner to address plastic waste and pollution.
The New Plastics Economy offers a single platform to the industry, government, NGOs, scientists, students and citizens to build a more sustainable global plastics value chain.
H&M will focus on the design, production process, materials, and the packaging for its products. The move is part of the company’s plans to work towards a circular economy for plastics by becoming a 100% circular and renewable business.
H&M Group environmental sustainability head Cecilia Brännsten said: “Plastic waste and pollution is a global environmental challenge. At H&M Group, we are committed to take the actions needed to shift the system towards a circular use of plastic packaging where it never ends up as waste.
“With the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, business and governments are aligned making it possible for us to act as one voice, which is an important step in the right direction.”
The retailer aims to replace single-use plastics with reusable models, as well as making 100% of its plastic packaging reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025.
