US-based technology startup AutoX has announced its plans to deliver groceries through autonomous cars in San Jose, California.
This service will be available in geo-fenced areas across the city and launched in time for the end-of-year harvest produce season so that customers can place their orders and receive fresh produce and other goods.
AutoX has partnered with e-commerce company GrubMarket.com on fresh produce.
GrubMarket.com will source organic and healthy food, and offer fresh produce to retailers such as Whole Foods, Blue Apron, Hello Fresh, and Chipotle.
AutoX founder and CEO Jianxiong Xiao said: “We’re very excited to launch the first autonomous grocery delivery and mobile store service in the heart of Silicon Valley with self-driving vehicles on the road.
“It’s the first step of our mission to democratise autonomy, and is a testament to our cutting-edge AI and all its potential capabilities.

By GlobalData“We believe self-driving car technologies will fundamentally change people’s daily lives for the better.”
The company is planning to launch the second phase of its grocery delivery and mobile store pilot in Mountain View and Palo Alto. It will also expand its network with more delivery partners.
Customers need to download the AutoX app to shop and order items such as fresh perishables, vegetables and fruits. The ordered groceries will be preserved in a temperature-controlled environment.
AutoX COO Jewel Li said: “We are enabling two shopping experiences with self-driving cars.
“You can order goods from an app and get them delivered by a self-driving vehicle. Or, our self-driving car brings a shelf of goods to you, and you can select and purchase onsite in front of your house.”
