Home furnishings retailer Ikea has announced plans to install solar panels atop its new Grand Prairie store, which is set to open this year in Texas, US.

This one would be the company’s second Dallas-Fort Worth-area store, and the installation of the 181,500ft² solar array is expected to be completed soon.

Mycon Construction will build the 290,000ft² IKEA Grand Prairie store and its 1,100 parking spaces on 30 acres along the eastern side of State Highway 161 and Mayfield Road.

The array will comprise a 1.25MW system and built with 2,800 large format panels. It will produce two million kilowatt-hours of electricity for the store every year.

Ikea US president Lars Petersson said: “Ikea has a mission to create a better everyday life for the many, and IKEA Grand Prairie can add to this goal while also keeping us the largest non-utility private solar owner in Texas.”

SunPower will develop, design and install the new store’s solar power system.

Representing the 48th solar project for Ikea in the US, the installation will contribute to the company’s solar presence atop nearly 90% of its locations in the country, generating a total of more than 42MW.

Other Texas Ikea stores are in Houston and Round Rock, with a San Antonio-area one in Live Oak, and a Fort Worth store to open in 2019.

Ikea has allocated $2.5bn worldwide to invest in renewable energy through 2020.
