Walmart has eliminated certain job roles and closed its North Carolina, US office in an ongoing effort to centralise employees in its primary hubs.

The announcement was first reported by Fox News.

An internal memo obtained by Reuters reveals that the retailer is directing office-based employees from Hoboken, New Jersey, and other smaller sites to relocate to its new headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas and Sunnyvale, California.

Walmart chief people officer Donna Morris outlined the company’s decision in a communication addressed to US office-based staff.

The development is a continuation of a broader relocation strategy initiated by the retailer in 2024, and aligns with the US corporate trend of requiring employees to return to the office for a portion of the working week.

The transition began in May 2024 when Walmart opted to transfer the bulk of its workforce from Dallas and Atlanta, and from its Toronto global tech hub, to Bentonville and offices in San Francisco and Hoboken.

Morris stated in the memo: “We are making these changes to put key capabilities together, encouraging speed and shared understanding.

Walmart did not disclose the number of employees impacted or the details of severance packages for those unwilling to relocate. Affected individuals have been given a month to decide on their willingness to move.
